Today we are discussing the qualifications to join the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) for the 2026/2027 academic year . As of now, undergraduate admissions for 2025/2026 are closed, and applications for 2026/2027 are expected to open later this year (usually May/June or July, depending on the announcement by TCU and UDSM). The qualifications are based on the official guidelines of the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) and the UDSM Directorate of Undergraduate Studies . No major changes have been announced for 2026/2027 so far – the criteria remain the same as previous years, and are available in the Undergraduate Prospectus 2025/2026 and the TCU Admission Guidebook 2025/2026 (which is still in effect or has been slightly updated).
Basic Qualifications for Undergraduate Degree Programmes – Direct Entry (Form Six)
To be selected for UDSM, an applicant needs to meet the general minimum entry requirements and specific requirements for the desired course (e.g. minimum points for science or arts).
General Minimum Entry Requirements:
- Certificate of Secondary Education (CSEE) or equivalent: At least 5 passes in acceptable subjects, of which 3 must be Credit level (C or better) before taking the ACSEE.
- Form Six Certificate (ACSEE) or equivalent: Two Principal passes in relevant subjects, with a total of points from three subjects (including subsidiary) not less than :
- 5 points for Arts/Humanities courses.
- 4 points for Science-based courses.
- Point regime: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, S=0.5, F=0. (Main passes in Divinity/Islamic Knowledge are not considered).
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Engineering: Principal passes in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM) or PCB with 4+ points (e.g. minimum D in key subjects).
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB): Principal passes katika History, English, au masomo ya arts na pointi 5+.
- Bachelor of Education (Arts/Science): Requires courses relevant to the specific field.
- Bachelor of Commerce/Business Admin: Principal passes katika Economics, Accountancy, au Mathematics.
- A relevant diploma (NTA Level 6 or equivalent) with Second Class or Credit/B grade from a university registered with NACTE and accepted by the UDSM Senate.
- Or Foundation Programme from OUT or Mature Age Entry Examination (MAEE) with a score of at least 100 (50+ in each paper).
- For Masters (coursework + dissertation): At least Lower Second Class (GPA 2.7) or equivalent.
- Kwa Masters by thesis: GPA 3.5+.
- For PhD: Masters with good qualifications and research proposal.
How to Apply for UDSM 2026/2027
- Visit the official admission website: https://admission.udsm.ac.tz/ (undergraduate applications are made through TCU's Central Admission System for direct entry).
- For equivalent applicants: Apply directly to UDSM or through CAS.
- Verify qualifications in the Undergraduate Prospectus 2025/2026 (or latest update) and TCU Admission Guidebook 2025/2026 (available at tcu.go.tz).
- Applications are advertised in newspapers, UDSM website, and TCU.
- Use the online application and pay the application fee.
- After being selected: Get an admission letter, pay fees, and report to the college (usually November or October for intake).
- Very competitive, higher points (8–12+ km) have better chances for popular courses.
- HESLB loans are available on a priority basis (science, engineering, health courses).
